Testicular Cancer & the link between Steroid and Drug Use

Posted by aelling

Below is an excerpt of reader comments taken from the online USA Today article entitled " 'Livestrong' army enlists presidential candidates". I am the person entitle 'aelling' and felt compelled to voice my knowledge of testicular cancer once individuals started posting outright lies and untruths regarding the causes of testicular cancer. Start at the bottom of the article and read from bottom to top to get the correct chronology of the argument.

aeling is right - there's no proven link of steroids to cancer.

Our best bet is to disapprove of steroid use for the correct reasons, not unproven ones.

daniellemh17- You are right, the risk factors I listed are not guaranteed causes, but those items have been identified through scientific study and show an increased risk for testicular cancer. To implicitly state that a drug(s) does cause testicular cancer, as was stated in earlier comments, cannot be substantiated by research. I am in no way a proponent of steroid use but from all the studies that have been done, a person cannot point to any specific drug(s) as a cause of testicular cancer. Since the direct cause of testicular cancer is not known, you cannot absolutely rule out anything, but keep in mind that steroids have been used and abused, particularly by bodybuilders and other strength athletes, for decades. If they caused testicular cancer, that association would likely have been documented, or at least hinted at, in the scientific literature by now.

aelling - you can't exactly say that steroids don't cause it when no one knows the cause. It has been considered as link as steroids are linked to other types of cancer as well. The items you mentioned as risk factors aren't necessarily "causes" either, they are just guesses.

Nope, not paid or trying to put spin on anything, just felt compelled to put forth the facts about testicular cancer.

No I did not say that. But you stated "He (Armstrong) might even amount to some kind of inspiration if he at least admitted that his cancer was caused by his choice to use drugs." Armstrong had testicular cancer and there are no studies that link or show the development of testicular cancer due to drugs of any type. The insinuation of a drug(s) as causing testicular cancer is unfounded.

The above statement is completely untrue. The fact is that no one knows what causes testicular cancer. A number of potential risk factors have been identified
